WIP Wednesday

Just popping in quickly to show you all the start of Max's birthday quilt.

Slowly, slowly! I was hoping to get the top stitched up so i could get my Penny Sampler back up on my design wall but it would seem that i didn't make enough of the little "penny patches" (the little tiny 4 patches). So i need to get those made up, i'm thinking i'll just make the rest in all low volume prints, i'm trying to have the quilt read as mainly blue. Though it's the green that i'm seeing first. I may need to remove some of the larger green blocks and replace them for blue.  I also think i may need a little pop of red in the bottom left corner, thoughts on that?

I also have this ready to go.

Fabrics cut and ready for the next two fusion stars for this quilt.

I've decided that i'm going to use the nine blocks i'm making for the quilt as my first attempt at quilt as you go. I'm thinking maybe two lines of echo quilting in each star, but the questions is... what colour of thread do i use? Should i use just one colour? Or try and match all the colours? Or maybe try a variegated? What do you guys think? I'm hoping to get quilting tomorrow!

That's it for me today! Hope everyone is having a great day!
High fives for sewing something other than my Penny Sampler!!

  1. I love it! I had to do the same thing, make more penny patches. It seemed endless, but it's done. High five for sewing something else! :)

  3. Love the colours in Max's quilt, but I agree that the green is really popping for me. A think a wee bit more blue will be perfect for making it read blue with pops of green and red. Your fusion star block is utterly stunning! I've never done QAYG but I think I would pick one variegated thread (but that is because I'm lazy and don't like changing thread colour if at all possible!).

  4. I have no answers to your questions but you seem very productive to me :-) I like the new quilt top but you are right I see the green first as well.

  5. Nice! I think you're right about the greens if you're going tor a blue feel.

  6. I love the star block! I would pick different colour threads, but that is just me! ;-)
I lik the idea of some red in the corner of the other wip.

  8. The quilt seems fairly split between the blue and green right now. LOVE your star! I vote either variagated or a thread that coordinates, but doesn't match, all those colors. Or medium grey or navy.

  9. Yes! There were sooo many penny patches! Can't wait to see it put together!

  10. I think the red in the corner is a good idea. I like that lighter yellowish green. Maybe you could switch that fabic in some places with the darker green. There seems to be a green patch in the left corner, but adding the red may disperse it. Those penny patches are sooo sweet!

  11. I think it looks great! A blue border or binding might be all it takes to have it read a lot more blue. I also think I'm seeing a lot of the red running on the same diagonal (that's just what is standing out to my eye) so if you could alternate the little penny patches with the solid parts of that 4-square and have some of the red running diagonally the other way, I feel like that might break it up a little more. But all the colours are just so gorgeous, and I really love how effective this simple design is! Too sweet for words. I especially love the parts of Briar Rose - they just combine the colours so well and are so fresh, and add so much interest! Gorgeous :^)

  12. The star is great. I love solids quilts, and need to try my hand at one soon.

I love your green fabrics, but I agree that it's reading more green than blue. Maybe more of the darker blues, as the light ones look more low volume than blue. Great progress though! I pulled my colors, but then decided to finish older projects before cutting into them. Maybe this weekend I'll get my Penny Patch together.

  13. Look at you go!! Max's quilt is looking good. I would add 1 more orange penny patch block or take one away so there is an odd number. Can't wait to see your new stars; shot cottons are awesome. Are they for your Christmas quilt? I would use a neutral silvery gray thread if itis for your Christmas quilt. Double high five!!!

  14. I am loving Max's quilt! I love the green but if you want it to read more blue, I do think you need to swap some of green blocks. I think the amount of red is just fine :)

WOW those fusion stars are gorgeous!

For the record, I love your penny sampler updates. High fives for being your awesome self!

  15. I think an extra pop of red in the lower left would be fun! I'm so excited you're doing more fusion stars. I could stare at it all day. Matching the colors for quilting sounds really time consuming :)

  16. ooooooo...penny patch! Looks great. No! You cannot suck me in!

  17. I agree that one more red in the left corner would be nice. It is reading both blue and green to me, probably equally right now. VERY BOY and very cool.

  18. First...Max's quilt is amazing!!! No changes needed:) Second... I think matching the thread would be pretty awesome on that star, a pain but cool, and Third...these star blocks are going to be cool for trying QAYG I think. Are you using any particular tutorial?
